How much does a hand painted icon cost?The simplest option would be an icon of a saint with a gilded halo with 24 carat genuine gold leaf. The price of an icon depends on its size and complexity. There are few standard icon sizes available: 15 x 20 cm - from 2500 USD 21 x 28 cm - from 3500 USD 30 x 40 cm - from 4500 USD 50 x 70 cm - from 6500 USD If you need an icon of a certain size please contact us for details.

How to order an icon?In the icon painting studio of Natalia Markina you can order an icon of any size and complexity. Please use the online form provided to initiate the process. The work on the ordered icon begins after an advance payment of 50% deposit is received. The icon is handed over to a customer after the full amount is paid. You can pick up the icon from my workshop or get it posted to your address. We send icons worldwide. Please note that delivery cost to be calculated separately.

Care instructionsCleaning: 1. Gently dust your icon with feather brush or wide squirrel hair brush to remove large dust particles. 2. Wipe remaining dust with slightly moistened clean microfiber cloth. General care: 1. Do not place an icon close to cooling, heating and humidifying/dehumidifying equipment. 2. Do not place your icon next to windows, doors and air vents. Avoid air draft around an icon. 3. Keep your icon in controlled or stable environmental conditions. Avoid sudden fluctuations in temperature and humidity. 4. Keep your icon away from direct sunlight to prevent fading and damage 5. Keep your icon away from life fire sources like candles and oil lamps. When those in use, make sure they are at least 20 cm away from an icon and secured from falling over. 6. Best way to protect your icon is to keep it in a "kivot" - a wooden icon case with glass front panel. If using an antique kiot make sure it is free from wood eating insects.

What is an icon board made of?We mostly use lime (linden) wood boards with oak trusses at the back to minimize natural warping. Linen cloth is adhered with the rabbit skin glue and covered with natural gypsum gesso. When it is required that board is to be made in Australia we use jelutong timber, native hardwoods or an oak is used for trusses.

What is a measured icon?Measured icon is a special icon which is painted on a board matching a baby's height at birth. A Saint Patron given to a baby at Christening is depicted in full length. Tradition to paint such an icon, which has gain a popularity lately, has its origins in Russian Royal Court of 17th - 18th centuries when special icon was ordered not only to commemorate the birth or Christening of royal babies but also to protect them throughout their lives. What is the gilded icon?An icon where some elements or areas are covered with gold. We use pure 24 carats gold leaf for icon gilding. All halos on our icons are gold gilded. Gold gilded background is also a very popular option. Decorative engraving and stamping is available to enhance gilded areas with additional effects. Click here for samples.
